El anatomista y fisiólogo Jan Evangelista Purkinje (Libochovice, 1787 - Praga, 1869) publicó el tratado Beiträge zur Kenntniss des Sehens in subjectiver Hinsicht en 1819. En él, ofreció la primera descripción de formas percibidas, a través de la visión, que no se correspondían con la realidad material que provenéía del mundo. Estas imágenes estaban basadas en las teorías sobre la persistencia luminosa en la retina. Fueron acuñadas por Jonathan Crary como ‘postimágenes’ y correspondían a la “presencia de una sensación en ausencia del estímulo”. Las descripciones gráficas de Purkinje están reunidas en cuatro láminas grabadas con fondos negros, ocres y sin relleno.
Experimentation
The anatomist and physiologist Jan Evangelista Purkinje (Libochovice, 1787 - Prague, 1869) published the treatise Beiträge zur Kenntniss des Sehens in subjectiver Hinsicht in 1819. In it, he offered the first description of forms perceived, through vision, which did not correspond to the material reality coming from the world. These images were based on the theories of luminous persistence in the retina. They were coined by Jonathan Crary as 'afterimages' and corresponded to the "presence of a sensation in the absence of the stimulus". Purkinje's graphic descriptions are collected on four engraved plates with black, ochre and unfilled backgrounds.
