Post-Contingent Coherence is a single-channel video showing a pianist playing Frédéric Chopin's 'Nocturne Op.55, No. 1 in F Minor' on a transparent piano. The pianist suffers from anosognosia. The piano material is related to Thomas Metzinger's thesis on the construction of the model of the self: "transparency is a special form of darkness". The first-person shots reveal the pianist playing with her two hands, a perspective that differs from the third-person shots, when the viewer can discover her paralysis. In addition, the sounds coming from each perspective overlap as different realities occurring at the same time.

Research

In 1914, neurologist Joseph Babinski defined the term anosognosia when he discovered that some of his patients, suffering from left lateral paralysis due to damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, denied suffering from such paralysis.

In 1919, the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, suffered brain damage that resulted in anosognosia. The president denied having left lateral palsy and, in the public eye, was rendered incapable of defending the Treaty of Versailles. His functions as president could have continued, as his other cognitive abilities were not impaired. Historical studies place his partner, Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, as the first U.S. president since she took over much of Woodrow's agenda.

Anosognosia produces the denial of the rest of the pathologies suffered by the affected persons. If they suffer from left lateral paralysis and anosognosia at the same time, the latter pathology produces the denial of the paralysis. In the consultation they are usually asked to perform different actions with their left hand, for example, tying their shoes. The response of these patients is the attempt to tie them for hours with their right hand, even making use of this hand to move their left hand. This last case is a less common situation, produced by the relationship between anosognosia and another pathology called somatoparaphrenia (Ramachandran, 2012). Patients suffering from anosognosia fill in mental spaces with 'inaccurate' information to substitute for the 'accurate' information they do not possess.

What has been considered as an insane manifestation in the past, today, with the rise of cognitive sciences and contemporary neurosciences, may be the best way to understand certain patterns common to all human beings. Today, we can understand such disturbances as biological processes that affect all people, to varying degrees. During our lives "we use details and reasoning to cope with the stresses of everyday life". Based on this position, any person could be considered anosognosic at some level, since in specific situations, such as a personal tragedy, we deny part of reality in order to cope with it.
